Up to 94% of around 3,000 surveyed businesses have been badly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI).

The VCCI survey, which was carried out in September, showed that around 90.8% of the interviewed companies said that they had to reduce staff during the pandemic. Some 92% that commented were large-scale firms.
Enterprises in the areas of education and training, food and drinks and tourism services cut staff the most during the pandemic.
Workers in the south-east, Mekong Delta and coastal central regions lost the most jobs due to Covid-19 with rates of 95%, 93% and 92% respectively. Meanwhile, those in the Red River Delta region have been least affected with 78% and the rate for other regions in the country was around 90%.
According to the VCCI, labour shortages have become a problem for many firms to resume operations due to social distancing measures. Many workers returned to their home town and have not yet come back for work, which is partially due to difficulties related to social distancing regulations which are still applied in many localities.
Under the VCCI’s proposal, the ministries of Health and Information and Communications need to quickly put the Covid-19 green card system into operation. This will help to facilitate travel.
Cities and provinces also should help local companies to help workers return as the pandemic has basically been brought under control in many localities. Local authorities can help companies to set up medical stations for Covid-19 prevention and control, the VCCI suggested.
It is necessary for localities to provide vocational training courses for people who are unemployed due to the pandemic.
