The Southeast Asian Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAF) recently released automotive market data for the first eight months of 2022. The 7 countries tracked and statistically by AAF include Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
In total, the countries tracked by AAF consumed more than 2.2 million cars in the first eight months of 2022, up 31.3% year-on-year in 2021. Indonesia and Thailand continue to lead the way top of the area. Vehicle sales in Indonesia and Thailand in the first eight months of this year reached 658,232 vehicles and 589,863 vehicles, respectively.
Following in terms of car sales are Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines, respectively. The number of cars sold in these 3 countries is 447,209 cars, 262,940 cars and 212,872 cars.
Myanmar and Singapore are the two countries with the lowest total car sales, reaching 6,579 vehicles and 28,910 vehicles respectively in the first eight months of 2022.
In terms of sales, in the first eight months of 2022, the Vietnamese market ranked fourth, achieving a growth of 49.9 % over the same period last year. Among the countries listed by AAF, Vietnam is the second highest growth market, after Malaysia (up 62.9% over the same period).
Regarding the number of cars produced, AAF only counted in 6 markets, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, not Singapore.
Accordingly, Thailand was the largest car producer in the region in the first eight months of the year with a total production output of 1,225,776 vehicles. Indonesia ranked second with a production volume of 920,376 vehicles, up 33.2% compared to the first eight months of 2022.
In the first eight months of 2022, the automobile production output of the Vietnamese market reached 160,856 vehicles, up 43.6% over the same period last year. With this result, Vietnam ranked 4th in automobile production output.
The number of manufactured vehicles in Vietnam is behind Malaysia, which produced 439,372 vehicles in the first eight months of the year, up 70.3% compared to the first eight months of 2021.
According to a report by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), in August 2022, sales of the whole Vietnamese market reached 30,846 vehicles, up 2% compared to July and up 247%. compared to August 2021 because last year was the period of social distancing.
VAMA said that out of 30,846 vehicles sold, there were 25,065 passenger cars, 5,513 commercial vehicles and 268 specialized vehicles. Compared to the previous July 2022, sales of passenger cars increased by 9%, commercial vehicles decreased by 20% and specialized vehicles increased by 21%.
Sales of domestically assembled cars reached 15,499 units, up 3% compared to July 2022 and sales of imported CBU cars reached 15,347 units, up only 1% over the previous month.
The report from VAMA also said that the total sales of the whole market by the end of August reached 262,940 vehicles, up 50% compared to the same period in 2021. In which, passenger cars reached 206,087 units, up 69%; commercial vehicles reached 52,956 vehicles, up 6% and specialized vehicles reached 3,897 vehicles, up 2% compared to 2021.
