Two cases of people using boats to cross the border illegally from Cambodia into Vietnam have been found and quarantined by functional forces in the Mekong Delta province of Long An.
Border guards in Long An Province said on Monday they have imposed administrative penalties on two Vietnamese nationals, Nguyen Van Dung and Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh, for coming into the country illegally, and put them under quarantine to ensure COVID-19 prevention and control as per regulations.
At about 1:00 am on Sunday, Dung and Anh were found crossing Cai Co River from Cambodia into Vietnam on a rowboat in Long An’s Tan Hung District.
The duo admitted that they had been working as hired laborers in the neighboring country. However, the current COVID-19 outbreak in Cambodia has left them unemployed and forced them to find their way home.
While looking for a way to cross the border, they came across a rowboat on the bank of the Cai Co River and used it to enter Vietnam.
As growing concern of the coronavirus takes hold in Vietnam, Long An border guards have stepped up patrolling the borders, especially along the Cai Co River, an easy-to-pass route between the two countries.
In a previous case, functional forces in Long An Province last Thursday caught Ly Hoang Chanh, a native of Tan Hung District, helping an illegal immigrant cross from Cambodia to Vietnam by the waterway.
