In the first six months of 2024, Vietnam experienced 5,250 deaths due to traffic accidents. During this period, the country saw over 12,300 traffic accidents, marking an increase of nearly 1,850 cases but a reduction of over 700 fatalities compared to the same timeframe in 2023.
The National Traffic Safety Committee reported that between December 15, 2023, and June 14, 2024, traffic accidents resulted in over 5,250 deaths and nearly 9,600 injuries. This represents an increase of more than 2,700 injuries compared to the same period in 2023.
Most accidents occurred on roads, with more than 12,200 cases, resulting in over 5,190 deaths and 9,580 injuries. There were 66 railway accidents, causing 48 deaths and 10 injuries, and 27 waterway incidents, leading to 15 deaths and 5 injuries.
Some road accidents caused significant damage, such as a collision between a container truck and a sleeper bus on March 5 in Tuyen Quang, which killed 6 people and injured 4, and a multi-vehicle crash on June 8 in Ha Tinh that left 3 people dead.
The Vietnam Aviation Administration recorded 101 mandatory safety reports from December 16, 2023, to June 15, 2024, including 42 level D incidents, which pose risks to flight safety. This is an increase of 3 level D incidents compared to the same period in 2023.
Statistics revealed 26 incidents due to technical failures, two incidents involving bird strikes, and one incident where an aircraft encountered turbulence caused by another aircraft. Additionally, there were 13 human-caused incidents, with 7 attributed to flight crew, 3 to technical staff, and 2 to ground staff.
