The boycott has gone viral on social platforms, particularly Facebook and Twitter. Some local consumers said they had thrown away their H&M purchases.
H&M shops in Hanoi saw a sharp fall in customers over the weekend even those located in large malls.
On Sunday, an H&M shop in Thanh Xuan District saw almost no customers. The same situation was seen at some other H&M shops in Hanoi.
H&M Vietnam’s Facebook page has been filled with angry comments.
A Facebooker named Luong Tuan Phi said that “A famous fashion name does not know to distinguish between the right and the wrong. Without a correction and apology, H&M must be expelled from Vietnam. Don’t operate in a country without respecting its sovereignty”.
The Swedish retailer launched its first store in Ho Chi Minh City in September 2017 and then expanded its operation in Hanoi. To date, 11 H&M stores have been established in Vietnam, including four in Hanoi, four in HCM City, three facilities in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, the central city of Danang and the northern province of Quang Ninh.
