Competent authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have concluded their assessment of the deaths of two patients at two local cosmetic surgery hospitals last month and attributed one of the fatalities to doctors’ medical errors.
According to Nguyen Thi Huynh Mai, chief of the office of the municipal Department of Health, a team of specialists and experts across various medical fields had participated in assessing the two cases.
The first fatality occurred at Kangnam Plastic Surgery Hospital in District 3.
C.T.L., 59, arrived at the infirmary for a facelift on October 11.
She was fine after the three-hour surgery but began to display symptoms including difficulty breathing, lipedema, cyanosis, and drowsiness at around 9:00 pm the same day.
Doctors diagnosed L. with an anaphylactic shock and the patient was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital for further treatment.
She passed away on October 14.
Quoting the results of the evaluation, Mai confirmed that L. had suffered an anaphylactic shock due to anesthetic, and the Kangnam hospital had followed procedures in giving her proper treatment for the medical complication.
The second victim, 33-year-old V.N.A.T., came to EMCAS Cosmetic Surgery Hospital in District 10 on October 17 for a breast augmentation surgery.
Following the operation, the patient suffered respiratory failure and pneumothorax that led to a cardiac arrest.
According to Mai, doctors at the EMCAS hospital had not thoroughly reviewed the patient’s medical records before the surgery and did not consult specialists to identify the cause when abnormalities were observed in the patient’s cardiovascular system.
The infirmary also lacks post-operative care procedures, which led to its failure to provide prompt treatment when the complication occurred, the health official added.
The city’s health department has requested that directors of the two hospitals convene meetings to review their shortcomings and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The agency also ordered EMCAS to terminate all contracts with its employees to review their qualifications after Dinh Viet Hung, the surgeon who operated on T., appeared to be using an illegitimate certificate.
The health department is expected to coordinate with district-level administrations to closely supervise plastic surgery facilities across the metropolis in the future.
