A Vietnam court on Tuesday sentenced a middle school headmaster to eight years in prison for sexually abusing nine students between 2016 and 2018.
The verdict said Dinh Bang My, 58, headmaster of the Thanh Son boarding middle school for students of minority groups, located in the northern province of Phu Tho, had violated nine male students, the youngest being 14 years of age, multiple times in his sleeping room at the school.
The Phu Tho People’s Court gave My eight years in jail and banned him from working in education for two years.
The man was also required to pay VND37 million (US$1,600) in total compensation to the nine victims.
My was found guilty of forcing the students to have oral sex with him and satisfy him by hand many times from 2016 to December 2018 in the school sleeping room, according to court documents.
The headmaster would penalize any of the students disobeying him.
My even sexually abused some of the students for five to six times.
Some teachers and security guards once asked a student to come to “My’s room to deal with some matters,” according to the indictment.
School teachers and their trade union claimed that nobody was aware of the sexual abuse, despite it happening for a long time, as no students had denounced My.
Some students then stepped forward to report it to local authorities.
The local media got the tip-offs to cover the scandal and My was arrested and prosecuted.
