Hanoi’s city government has announced plans to construct an urban rail line, Line 2, that will connect the city center directly to Nội Bài International Airport. Managed by the Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board (MRB), the planned route will extend from Nam Thăng Long Urban Area, passing through Trần Hưng Đạo, Thượng Đình, and various city landmarks, before reaching the airport and continuing to Sóc Sơn District.
The project, which has been delayed in the past, is now slated to begin between 2024 and 2025. It is expected to complete fully by 2034, with the Nam Thăng Long to Nội Bài segment targeted for operation by 2030. The approved feasibility study outlines an 11.5-km route, including 2.6 km of elevated tracks and 8.9 km of tunnels, as well as 10 stations and a 17.5-hectare depot in Bắc Từ Liêm District.
With Nội Bài Airport currently seeing nearly 30 million passengers annually, primarily served by taxis, private cars, and limited buses, the rail line aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve travel convenience, especially during holiday periods. The direct rail connection promises a faster, modern transit option for locals and international travelers alike, boosting the quality of the city’s transportation infrastructure.
