The EURO 2024 tournament is a major sporting event that attracts global attention, including from fans in Vietnam. Unfortunately, it also creates opportunities for criminal activities such as online soccer betting. These activities can lead to various other crimes, including fraud, theft, and violence, posing a threat to public safety.
On July 3, 2024, Tan Phu District Police arrested 11 individuals involved in an illegal soccer betting ring operating through the bong88 website. The suspects, M.H.V and P.B.A, were caught organizing bets for players at CN6 Street, Son Ky Ward.
Just days earlier, on June 30, 2024, the Criminal Police Team and Tan Son Nhi Ward Police apprehended N.T.N. and seven others for organizing soccer betting at a cafe on Cau Xeo Street.
On the same day, police in Tan Thanh Ward caught four individuals gambling on soccer matches at a coffee shop on Le Dinh Thu Street.
Additionally, on June 27, 2024, the Criminal Police Team and Tay Thanh Ward Police arrested N.V.D. and ten others for running an illegal betting operation at a Luu Chi Huu Street cafe.
Soccer betting has severe social consequences, leading to financial ruin, family breakdowns, and increased crime rates. Many bettors fall into debt, resorting to high-interest loans and even contemplating suicide due to their losses.
With EURO 2024 underway, online betting has become increasingly sophisticated, making it difficult for authorities to track and shut down these operations. Servers based abroad complicate the issue further.
Tan Phu District Police are committed to continuing their crackdown on illegal gambling, especially during the EURO 2024 finals. They plan to implement stricter surveillance and enforcement measures to dismantle betting rings and prevent related criminal activities.
