HÀ NỘI — A painting exhibition featuring 70 artworks in Hà Nội reveals artist Ly Trần’s ability to paint with different materials.
Entitled Đa Sắc (Multicolour) the exhibition is the fruits of years of hard work creating art and expressing her experiences and memories about the places she has visited.
The pieces have strong and vivid colours infused with light to add mystery. They are inspired by anything that evokes emotions in her from tangible subjects such as flowers, landscapes, humans, animals to the intangible such as balance, the circle of life, love, and more.
“As an enthusiast of graffiti art, I enjoy adventures with colours,” Ly said.
“I often fuse impressionism and expressionism with emotions to create my artworks. While adoring lacquer, I am also proficient with various other media, therefore in addition to oil and lacquer paintings, some of my works were painted in multiple layers with different materials combined.”
She doesn’t frame herself according to any particularly school of art. Some of her works are impressionist, others abstract and others experimental. She chooses colours by evoking the experience with the intensity and movement of light.
“When I see the paintings I don’t care about style of trend of painting,” said artist Đặng Tuấn. “I feel her emotion and thought which she expresses through painting.
“With a very liberal brushstroke and a lot of expression inside she is not concerned with style or school she paints. It is very good in painting because the most important is emotion.”
Born and raised in Việt Nam, Ly studied in Russia and lived in the US. This has given her the opportunity to live and travel through numerous countries and be exposed to multiple cultures.
She started painting when she was a little girl. Her passion for art came in 2001 when she studied industrial design in Moscow.

Seven years at school with lessons in painting, graphics, sculpture, photography and others sowed in her a love for arts and it became part of her life.
In 2010 came a turning point for her. She had time to reflect on the things she enjoys and she is passionate about. She decided to end all of her businesses and return to painting full-time.
Ly displays seven lacquer paintings at the exhibition which are her experience with Vietnamese traditional material.
Lacquer painting is one of reasons making her decision to return to homeland. She wants to popularise the art genre to the world.
“I need to experience lacquer painting with modified materials such as mica acrylic or mix media,” Ly said.
The exhibition runs until June 21 at Exhibition House, 29 Hàng Bài Street. — VNS
