According to the latest policy update, YouTube requires content creators to label when uploading videos involving AI in production to avoid confusion for viewers.

According to CNN, YouTube users must notify if the video contains content generated by AI. Specifically, content creators will be required to identify the timing of AI-generated content within the video to label and alert viewers. Accounts that do not comply with this regulation will not be eligible for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) and may have their videos removed.
YouTube will introduce two types of labels. The first type will be displayed on the description panel to classify whether the video is AI-generated or not. The second type will appear within the video player when the content addresses sensitive topics such as elections, conflicts, or community health crises.
However, YouTube only requires content creators to label content that appears convincingly real and is generated by AI. Obvious synthetic content or content where users utilize AI for adjusting lighting, colors, creating subtitles, etc., will be overlooked by YouTube.

This is YouTube’s first step towards limiting the exploitation of AI to spread misinformation. Experts are concerned that the development of AI-generated tools could lead to a flood of fake news on the Internet, posing a threat to the upcoming US presidential election later this year.
YouTube also plans to allow users to request the removal of AI-generated content mimicking real people, including the use of their faces or voices. However, the company will consider various factors before deciding to remove it. If the content is satirical or involves government officials or celebrities, YouTube will apply stricter standards.
According to the NY Post, YouTube stated that the company will provide specific guidelines along with examples when the regulation is implemented in 2024. The company is focusing on building teams and developing technology capable of moderating content on a large scale to ensure that YouTube’s AI tools generate appropriate content.
The latest YouTube update is expected to launch around September.
