The coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis hit the headlines after Wuhan in China witnessed a high number of deaths and infections. Apart from Wuhan, the rest of China mainly escaped the ravages of the coronavirus. Similarly, the Asian nations of Northeast Asia and the Mekong Delta have escaped the horrendous death tolls of Europe, North America, South America, and other parts of the world.
It is like a continuous geographic space linking China, Japan, and the Mekong Delta is witnessing a different coronavirus crisis. Hence, from Japan to Vietnam, the death toll ratio per million remains extremely low.
In terms of deaths, the nations America, Brazil, Mexico, India, the United Kingdom, and others, continue to witness an enormous loss of life. Numbers-wise, the current death toll is 474,933 America, 231,561 Brazil, 166,200 Mexico, 155,114 India, and 112,465 United Kingdom. The death ratio per one million people in these nations is 1,651 in the United Kingdom, 1,430 in America, 1,281 in Mexico, 1,085 in Brazil, and 112 in India.
However, the most deaths acknowledged in the Asian nations of Northeast Asia (the Russian Federation belongs to a vast geographic space that includes Northeast Asia) and the Mekong Delta is Japan with approximately 6,400 deaths. In terms of deaths per million, the following are 58 Myanmar, 50 Japan, 29 South Korea, 3 China, 1 Thailand, 0.6 Mongolia, 0.4 Vietnam, and 0.4 Taiwan. No deaths have been reported in Cambodia and Laos. Therefore, the number of deaths and infections are extremely low compared to Europe, North America, South America, and other parts of the world.
Thorough research is needed to investigate the climatic, dietary, geographic, and other important factors that link this vast region where death from coronavirus is relatively minor. Equally, could it be that the coronavirus is much older and pre-existed in this geographic space but was much milder? Similarly, the immunology of this vast region that is largely unscathed needs to be examined.
It should be stated that nations including Japan and South Korea have high elderly populations. Thus both nations appeared suspect to high elderly deaths. However, this never materialized to any extent.
Equally important, nations including Japan and South Korea can reduce infections rapidly in comparison to European and South American nations. Hence, the geographic puzzle of coronavirus remains a mystery. Therefore, one of these mysteries is the relatively low number of deaths in the Asian nations of Northeast Asia and the Mekong Delta.
