Nguyen Van Ton, Director of the Vinaconex Water Supply Joint Stock Company (Viwasupco) confirmed on October 14 that there was no toxic substance in strange-smelling tap water in Hanoi.
According to Ton, they had quickly cleaned up the water tanks after receiving the news that a truck discharged oil and contaminated the Da River. They also sent employees and hired local people to help clean up the oil.
Their testing results show that tap water from Da River water plant met the requirements of the Ministry of Health. Ton said the strange-smelling water caused by the high level of chlorine and there is no toxic substance in the water. Ton suggested that the residents should wait for the testing results from the Ministry of Health.
“High chlorine level in water caused the strange smell and I confirmed that there is no toxic substance,” Ton said.
Since early October, many residents in south-western Hanoi found out that their tap water had a strange smell and had to buy bottled water for daily use.
On October 14, Hoang Van Thuc, Deputy Director-General of the Vietnam Environment Administration Hoang Van Thuc announced that they are searching for a truck that illegally discharged oil into the environment. The oil later was swept to Da River and caused pollution.
