An 81-year-old grandmother in Vietnam has become a social media sensation after videos of her learning German with her granddaughter captured the hearts of millions. The heartwarming clips, posted on TikTok and Facebook, have gained millions of views, with netizens showering her with love and admiration.
“Grandma Wants to Learn German!”
It all began when Tra Hai My (31) shared short videos of her grandmother, Trieu Thi Xi, diligently practicing basic German vocabulary. Sitting beside her patient granddaughter, the elderly woman listens carefully, repeats each word, and even tries to recall its Vietnamese meaning — all with a determined smile.
“Grandma wanted to learn German because everyone in our family can speak it,” My explained. “My parents, my sister, and I lived and worked in Germany for some time. So, about two months ago, I started teaching her common everyday words.”
The clips of the silver-haired woman carefully repeating “Guten Morgen” and “Danke schön” have received waves of heart emojis, with some videos surpassing two million views. Many online users praised her passion for learning and the beautiful bond between the grandmother and her granddaughter.
A Joyful Routine and Family Bond
Although she sometimes forgets new words, My said her grandmother remains enthusiastic and persistent. “She tries to use German words in our daily conversations. These learning sessions have become something we both look forward to — they bring us closer.”
Grandma Xi lives in Thai My commune (formerly Cu Chi District), Ho Chi Minh City, with her eldest son’s family — My’s parents. My, who also lives and works in HCMC, visits her grandmother every week to teach her new phrases and record their lessons.
“Hearing that so many people online love and cheer for her makes Grandma very happy,” My said. “It gives her motivation to keep learning, even though it’s not easy at her age.”
A Grandmother Everyone Loves
Xi, who has three children and several grandchildren, said she feels fulfilled and happy surrounded by her caring family. My describes her grandmother as “the heart of the family” — someone who always brings warmth, support, and love to everyone around her.
“Her health isn’t as good as before, but I just hope she stays happy and healthy,” My shared. “That’s my only wish — to always see Grandma smiling.”
A Lesson Beyond Language
Besides helping with the family business and supporting her sister’s German language center, My says her grandmother’s story has inspired many.
“Learning German isn’t hard if you have persistence, passion, and curiosity — and Grandma is living proof of that,” she said with a smile.
