CNN Travel has selected Vietnamese bread (Banh Mi) among best 23 sandwiches worldwide.
According to CNN, the classic version of the local delicacy is pork-based, featuring chả lụa, Vietnamese-style pork roll, shredded pickled carrots, pickled daikon, cilantro leaves, mayonnaise, and other ingredients.
The taste is crunchy, fresh, savory, and utterly delicious for all who sample it, CNN Travel reported.
Banh Mi is a popular local cuisine typically sold from food carts on nearly every street corner in Ho Chi Minh City and across the nation, with the dish even being widely loved beyond the country’s borders.
Rounding off the list of the 23 best sandwiches globally are Pambazo of Mexico, Tramezzino of Italy, Shawarma of the Middle East, Smørrebrød of Denmark, Spatlo of South Africa, and Montreal smoked meat sandwich of Canada, CNN has revealed in the article.
In 2014, the Wall Street Journal also reported about the Saigon’s Best Banh Mi.
You’re rarely more than a couple of blocks from a banh mi shop or street vendor in Saigon, as Ho Chi Minh City is still called by southern Vietnamese. A delicious leftover from colonial times, banh mi are composed of a split baguette spread with mayonnaise and sometimes pate, filled with meat, cheese or canned fish, and garnished with daikon-and-carrot pickle, a few sprigs of cilantro, and often spicy Sriracha and umami-rich Maggie sauce.
The French-inspired sandwich was born in northern Vietnam but moved south with bread bakers after 1954, when France’s colonial rule ended and the nation was divided in two, according to Wall Street Journal.
Some wheeled carts serve banh mi dac biet (“special” banh mi), made with roast and barbecued pork, gio heo (mortadella-like steamed pork sausage), pork floss, pickle and fresh cilantro.
In sandwich-crazy Saigon you’re rarely more than a block or two from a banh mi shop or street vendor.
