Vietnam continues to see its power in Asia rise in 2020 according to the Asia Power Index 2020 Edition released by the Lowy Institute on October 19.
According to the index, Vietnam ranked 12th out of the 26 measured countries and territories, up one place compared to 2019.
This is the second consecutive year Vietnam has seen an increase in its comprehensive power, the People (NDO), a Vietnamese reported.
In this year’s rankings, Vietnam moved up one place from 13th to 12th, surpassing New Zealand. Vietnam also saw its already high score advance by a further 1.3 points thanks to its competent handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing diplomatic influence. In addition, Vietnam’s measurements in economic relationships and defense networks also increased.
Apart from Vietnam, only two other countries and territories – Australia and Taiwan (China), advanced in the ranking.
The US continued to be the most powerful country in Asia, followed by China, Japan, India and Russia. The top five in the rankings 2020 remained the same as in 2019.
The annual Asia Power Index measures influence in the Indo-Pacific region based on an analysis of eight measures of power in 26 countries and territories.
This year, Lowy added three more criteria to the list of those measured including COVID-19 response, ecological threats and defense dialogue, according to theNDO.
