From the start of the year until May 23, Vietnam exported 1.44 million tonnes of rice to the Philippines, which constituted 72.9% of the Philippines’ rice import volume, positioning Vietnam as the top rice supplier to this nation, as reported by the Vietnam Trade Office in the Philippines.
In comparison, Thailand was the second-largest exporter with 300,227 tonnes, Pakistan exported 144,834 tonnes, and Myanmar contributed 65,080 tonnes.
Vietnamese rice varieties, particularly DT8 and 5451, have gained favor in the Philippines for their delicate texture, as observed by several industry representatives.
Vietnamese rice currently leads the market in Metro Manila and the southern regions of the Philippines, attributed to its high quality and competitive pricing. This dominance suggests a promising future for Vietnamese rice exporters in the latter half of the year.
According to the Bureau of Plant Industry of the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture, the country’s rice imports saw a 20.3% increase in the first five months, totaling 1.97 million tonnes, which is an increment of 330,000 tonnes compared to the same timeframe last year.
Furthermore, since the year’s onset, the Bureau of Plant Industry has granted 4,066 custom clearance certificates to importing enterprises.
Vietnam exports a diverse range of rice varieties, with the main ones being:
- White rice: It’s the most significant in terms of export value, accounting for 45.1% of the total turnover and reaching 2.76 million tons.
- Jasmine and fragrant rice: These aromatic varieties represent 26.8% of the exports, totaling 1.64 million tons.
- Broken rice: This type accounts for 13.65% of the exports, with 834.4 thousand tons exported1.
Sticky rice: Known for its glutinous texture, sticky rice makes up 8.9% of the exports, amounting to 547.9 thousand tons. - Japonica and Japanese rice varieties: These are specialized varieties that constitute 4.2% of the rice exports.
These varieties cater to different preferences and culinary traditions in the global market, contributing to Vietnam’s reputation as a major rice exporter.
