73 traffic accidents occurred on the National Day holiday, leaving 57 dead, according to the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security.
During the three-day holiday from August 31 to September 2, traffic accidents also injured 46 people.
The department reported despite the fall in traffic accidents and injuries, the number of fatalities increased by 11 compared to the same period last year.
Police punished up to 16,616 violators nationwide with a total fine of more than VND7.15 billion (USD308,600), including 262 cases found with alcohol content violation. As many as 117 automobiles and over 2,300 motorbikes were confiscated. Meanwhile, 405 people had their driving licences revoked.
Authorities found 952 waterway violations, issuing fines worth VND683.25 million during the holiday period.
The National Committee for Traffic Safety received 67 calls to its hotline reporting traffic jams in several roads in Hanoi and HCM City, informing overloaded coaches on highways and increased ticket prices.
The country has set a target to cut the number of traffic accidents, deaths and injuries by 5-10% this year.
As many as 18,736 traffic accidents occurred in Vietnam in 2018, leaving 8,248 dead and 14,802 injured.
