From August 2 to August 4, the 20th Hoi An – Japan Cultural Exchange Event will take place in Hoi An City, Quang Nam. This event will offer residents and visitors a series of unique and special activities to celebrate this significant milestone.
A representative from the City People’s Committee stated that compared to previous events, the 2024 Hoi An – Japan Cultural Exchange has many new and significant elements, marking the 20th time Hoi An has collaborated with Japanese partners to host this event.
This year, Hoi An City, in collaboration with Japanese partners, will organize many new activities such as the acceptance ceremony of the model of the Japanese Bridge sponsored by the International Cultural Institute of Showa Women’s University, a football exchange with the coaching staff of Kawasaki Frontale FC, exchanges in baseball, boxing, and wrestling performances, and exhibitions such as “Japanese Dolls” and “Dialogue with Ukiyo-E Paintings.”

Notably, during the event, there will also be other outstanding activities such as the inauguration ceremony for the restoration of the Japanese Bridge, a display of books and photos about the Hoi An – Japan cultural exchange at Hoi An Park (2 Tran Hung Dao Street), a memorial offering ceremony at the graves of Japanese merchants in Hoi An (the graves of merchants Banjiro, TaniYajirobei, and Gusokukun), and the “Hizen Porcelain – Storytelling Patterns” experience program at the Museum of Trade Ceramics (80 Tran Phu Street) and the Museum of Folk Culture (33 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street).
Additionally, some annual activities will be maintained during the series of events, such as the “Hoi An, Japan and Visitors” boat race, Japanese calligraphy instruction, Japanese tea ceremony experiences, stick-pushing and sack-jumping games, and the reenactment of the procession of Princess Ngoc Hoa and merchant Araki Sotaro.
This year’s event will also feature the participation of Mr. Sugi Ryotaro, former Special Ambassador for Vietnam – Japan, who has had a significant influence on Japan and initiated and inaugurated the Hoi An – Japan Cultural Exchange Event, which has been held annually in Hoi An since 2003.
The 20th Hoi An – Japan Cultural Exchange Event in 2024 will officially commence at 7:30 PM on August 2 at An Hoi Sculpture Garden.
