On June 18, the Thai Senate approved a bill previously passed by the House of Representatives, with a vote of 130 in favor, 4 against, and 18 abstentions.
This bill now awaits the King’s approval and will take effect 120 days post-approval, making Thailand the third country in Asia to recognize same-sex marriage after Nepal and Taiwan.
LGBTQ+ activists celebrate this as a historic milestone, acknowledging over a decade of advocacy and political efforts. The new law ensures same-sex couples enjoy the same legal benefits as heterosexual married couples, including inheritance and adoption rights.
Thailand’s reputation for LGBTQ+ inclusivity has already made it a popular tourist destination. The recent Pride Month celebrations in Bangkok, featuring Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin in a rainbow shirt, underscored the nation’s progressive stance.
