In April 2023, the SFA announced the approval of these insects for human consumption, with plans to implement the legal framework by mid-2024. Some restaurants and bars in Singapore have already started incorporating insect ingredients into their menus.
Several international insect protein companies are preparing to enter the Singapore market. For example, Japanese startup Morus plans to introduce three silkworm-based products: protein bars, protein powder, and matcha powder.
According to the SFA, only farmed insects can be used for food or animal feed, not wild-caught ones. Importers and producers must follow strict guidelines, proving their facilities have food safety controls. Any unapproved insect species must undergo a safety evaluation before being sold.
Pre-packaged insect foods must have clear labeling of ingredients and will be inspected by the SFA to ensure food safety. Non-compliant products will be prohibited from sale.
Researchers have identified over 2,100 species of edible insects, many of which are rich in essential vitamins and minerals.
