Attracting attention with the news that Vegetarian Pigs are raised with a proprietary formula recently, BaF Vietnam Agriculture Joint Stock Company (BAF) said there will be a press conference to share details about this incident. According to BAF, raising pigs with “vegetarian bran” is the future trend of the livestock industry, not a trendy form of PR.
In Vietnam, animal husbandry accounts for the second largest proportion, only after rice. However, in the development process from the past until now, the proportion of domestic livestock enterprises is quite modest compared to FDI enterprises. While, it should be recognized that the slaughter rate of the total pig herd of these enterprises is very low. Therefore, 3F (feed-farm-food) is a trend that is also considered a tool to help domestic enterprises compete in the market.
With BaF, “feed” represents the bran supplied to internal pigs currently produced from the Company’s factory. The bran does not contain ingredients from animal protein (such as bone meal, blood meal, feather meal, fish meal …), does not contain lean substances, weight gainers and is not sold commercially. The formula is researched by a team of nutritionists of the Company. Because if using bran, animal protein, it will have potential disease risks for livestock.
Regarding “farm”, Mr. Phan Ngoc An – Deputy General Director of BaF – added: “ Once a pig eats vegetarian bran, it must not eat any substances related to lean gain, weight gain… and especially, are antibiotics. In order to do this, pigs must be raised in a clean environment so that there are fewer diseases and fewer new diseases without using antibiotics .”
The standard barn must choose a suitable location, far from pathogens, especially away from the apartment complex. Transport must have a specialized vehicle to transport feed to the farm, as well as transport pigs to customers. Limit people entering the barn, people who enter must really need and must not be exposed to pathogens before entering. As for the staff at the camp, there is a separate area, only once a month can be returned.
Finally, “food”, BaF pork and processed products such as sausages, spring rolls… are currently sold exclusively at Siba Food stores and the Meat shop model. Up to now, the system has about 60 Siba Food stores and 250 Meat Shop. The plan is to expand to 100 Siba Food stores and 1,000 Meat Shop stores by 2023.
BAF is showing great ambition in the pig industry. At the end of September 2022, the Company started construction of 4 clusters of shaved pig farms in Tay Ninh. This move is part of the strategy to build a network of about 100 farms, 200,000 sows, 6,000,000 commercial pigs by 2030 and ambition to become a competitor of FDI livestock companies.
That’s the route, but no game is easy, not to mention a livestock game with a series of domestic and foreign giants participating. Not denying, President Truong Sy Ba said: “If you want to be successful, you must make a difference. BaF entered the livestock market in the context that there were many other large livestock enterprises in the country. The difference here BAF pigs can be called vegetarian pigs!”.
