A man from Vietnam has been confirmed to suffer from breast cancer after first detecting a lump in his breast four years ago.
Doctors at Vietnam-Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital, located in the north-central province of Quang Binh, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Wednesday that they had removed a malignant tumor from a man’s breast.
The patient is undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the hospital, Nguyen Van Phong, deputy director of the infirmary, said.
This is a very rare case that the hospital has ever detected, Phong added.
The patient is N.D.M., 67, from Ba Don Town, Quang Binh.
He had been hospitalized a few days prior to his surgery after discovering a lump in his right breast, measuring 23 x 13 cm.
His family said M. had noticed a small growth the size of a bean in his breast four years ago but he deemed it normal.
The lump became bigger two months ago but it did not hurt, so he ignored it, thinking it was just a minor injury.
The tumor suddenly turned sore in recent times, prompting him to come to the hospital for a check that confirmed his breast cancer later.
Breast cancer is something of a rarity in men but it is extremely malignant, according to Vietnam-Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital doctors.
They say it is highly recommended that men get screened for breast cancer whenever they find anything unusual in their chest.
