Despite closing its borders to foreign visitors, Japan still tops the World Economic Forum’s latest travel rankings.
According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) newly released Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021, Japan is at the top of the list of favorite destinations.
The survey assessed 117 countries and regions, in which the US ranked second, followed by Spain, France and Germany.
Previously, Japan ranked 4th according to the evaluation criteria of 2019 and 2nd place in 2021.
In other categories of the ranking, Japan ranks 4th for air transport infrastructure and cultural resources, 6th for ground and port infrastructure, and 12th for natural resources. The lowest position is 107 in response to climate change.
According to the WEF, Asia possesses an excellent balance of natural and cultural tourism resources. However, environmental sustainability issues are threatening the position of countries in this region in the ranking.
Topping the list of favorite destinations for the first time is good news for Japan’s tourism industry as the country gradually reopens its borders. On May 26, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, said that international tourists can come to Japan from June 10 when participating in package tours.
The country will issue tourist visas to citizens from 98 green zone countries. Accordingly, travelers only need to have a negative PCR test certificate before departure, no certificates of vaccination, airport testing, isolation or other preventive measures are required.
