A Step-by-Step Guide from GBS – Global Business Services LLC
In Vietnam, a valid Work Permit is one of the legal prerequisites for a foreigner to work. During the course of employment, changes to personal or employer information may require the renewal or reissuance of a work permit. So, what situations require reissuance, and what is the process?
Here’s a detailed breakdown from GBS, a professional service provider assisting foreigners and companies with work permit applications and renewals in Vietnam.
1. What is a Work Permit?
A Work Permit is an official document issued by the Vietnamese government allowing a foreign national to legally work in the country. It includes:
- Full name and nationality of the foreign worker
- Name of the employing organization
- Professional qualifications
- Validity period (up to 2 years)
2. Is There a Code on the Work Permit?
Technically, a Work Permit itself does not have a code. However, confusion often arises from visa and temporary residence card codes:
- LĐ1 indicates a foreign worker not required to obtain a work permit
- LĐ2 refers to foreign workers who do have a valid work permit
3. When Do You Need to Reissue a Work Permit?
Under Article 12 of Decree 152/2020/NĐ-CP, a work permit may be reissued in the following cases:
- The original permit is lost or damaged
- The foreign worker changes their name, nationality, or passport number
- The employer changes the company name (without changing the company code)
- The work location changes
- These changes must occur while the current work permit is still valid.
4. Required Documents for Reissuance (Applicable in Long An Province, 2025)
Foreign workers and their employers must prepare the following documents:
- Application Form for reissuance (Form No. 11/PLI per Decree 152/2020/NĐ-CP)
- Two passport-sized photos (4x6cm, white background, taken within the last 6 months)
- The original or certified copy of the current Work Permit (If lost: police confirmation from Vietnam or the foreign worker’s home country; If updated details: supporting documents (in Vietnamese or translated & legalized if issued abroad)
- Approval of the employer’s demand for foreign labor (unless exempted)
5. Where to Submit the Application?
The application must be submitted to the local Department of Home Affairs, where the foreigners live and work. Alternatively, employers may submit online at:
http://dvc.vieclamvietnam.gov.vn/
6. Processing Time
The reissuance process typically takes 3 working days from the date of receiving a complete and valid application.
7. Validity of the Reissued Work Permit
The renewed work permit will be valid for the remaining time of the original permit, minus the period already worked.
8. Government Fee
The official government fee for reissuing a work permit in Long An is: 450,000 VND per permit
