The announcement came from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in partnership with the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization (WeGO) in April 2024.
Vietnam boasts two cities on the list, with Hanoi climbing three spots to rank 97th compared to 2023, while Ho Chi Minh City holds steady at 105th place.
Hanoi’s inclusion reflects its ongoing efforts to develop a smart city model. The city aims to undergo digital transformation by 2025, paving the way for a greener, smarter, and more modern urban landscape. By 2030, Hanoi aims to cement its status as a smart, modern city, gradually integrating into regional and global smart urban networks.
IMD defines smart cities as urban areas leveraging technology to maximize benefits and minimize drawbacks of urbanization for residents.
