Hanoi has detected 1,802 dengue fever cases since early this year, including two deaths, according to the municipal Department of Health.
The city reported 228 dengue fever cases in 106 communes, including one fatality in Hoan Kiem District between August 31 and September 6. The districts of Thuong Tin, Nam Tu Liem, Thanh Oai and Dan Phuong were most affected.
The current weather is among the factors accounting for the increase in dengue fever patients.
Localities are urged to spray chemicals to kill mosquitoes in high-risk areas or areas with dengue fever patients. More work also needs to be done to raise people’s awareness of the disease.
Dr Nguyen Kim Thu from the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases said unlike virus-infected diseases that patients can recover without being treated for 3-5 days, those who contract dengue fever can be in critical condition for 4-7 days if not being provided with timely and proper treatment. The problem even can lead to death.
People are advised to visit doctors quickly if they have symptoms of vomiting, bellyache, fever or nosebleeds.
