HCM CITY – Fried banana is a famous street food in South and is also a childhood dish of many generations. However, this Vietnamese street food cooked by a Western man has made it even more special.
Around the end of November, the tall silhouette of a Western man behind a cart selling fried bananas started intriguing residents on Trần Đình Xu and Nguyễn Cư Trinh streets in District 1. His sign reads “fried bananas, fried pineapples”, all priced at VNĐ10,000 ($0.43) a pop.
Fabrice, 50, and owner of the little fried goods stand, is a French tourist “trapped” in Việt Nam due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Every day from 5am to 6am, he takes out his cart and heads to a convenience store and nearby local market to acquire ingredients. Around 10am and 11am, he cleans up and heads home.
Ánh Thu, a patron, said the fried cake has a buttery smell and is less greasy than traditional Vietnamese fried bananas.
Fabrice currently lives in a nearby hotel. He said if the stand makes enough for him to live, he will continue the job. VNS
