HÀ NỘI – Artist Ngô Xuân Bính is displaying more than 300 pieces themed Ego – Human at the Hà Nội Museum.
This is the largest exhibition of the artist’s career, featuring lacquer and oil paintings and more than 100 sculptures from materials such as bronze, stone and wood.
These works are designed for urban spaces, creating a colourful, cultural life for modern residents. They are displayed in a space with digital technology supporting and visual art making the exhibition unique.
“The exhibition idea is a combination of art and science,” said Bính at the exhibition opening ceremony.
“The new point in painting is self-renewal. I want to break all my achievements because creativity is a revolution.”
According to the artist it takes humanity thousands of years to form an ego or national identity, but only takes a few decades, or even just a few years, to erase the cultural ties typical of a region or a nation, such as craft villages, customs, architecture, farming methods, and religion.
He therefore always takes tradition as the source of his works.
The installation of big sculptures at the exhibition creates a city model offering visitors a glimpse of a new urban era which includes living space, green space, connections, working space, and art space.
Sculptor Phạm Sinh was impressed with the large display covering a 3,000sq.m space in the museum.
“It is amazing to see a lot of paintings and sculptures displayed in an exhibition,” Sinh said.
“It shows a huge amount of work. The works not only have Vietnamese traditional values but also are creative in shape, concept and space management.”
Bính, 65, was born in the central province of Nghệ An and lived in Russia for over 10 years. He is also known as the creator of the Nhất Nam martial arts school and a practitioner of Vietnamese traditional medicine.
In recent years, he has become one of the country’s most well-known artists, with exhibitions in Minsk and Moscow. He also received many international art awards. He is one of two foreigners given the title of Honourary Member by the Russian Academy of Arts.
He has displayed works at group exhibitions Niệm (Opinion) in 2019 and Du & Dội (Lilt and Fierceness) in Hà Nội.
Ego – Human exhibition is a part of the Hà Nội Festival of Creative Design 2022 held by the Hà Nội Department of Culture and Sports and Architecture magazine under the Việt Nam Association of Architects marking a new milestone in the city’s transition to a creative hub.
The exhibition runs until March 2023 at the Hà Nội Museum, Phạm Hùng Street, Nam Từ Liêm District. — VNS
