Vietnam Road Administration proposes stricter sanctions on those drinking and driving.
The Vietnam Road Administration has proposed harsher punishment for those driving while drunk.
Drivers with an alcohol content exceeding 80 milligrams / 100 milliliters of blood (Level 3) will be fined VND34-40 million ($1,500-$1,800) and have their driving license suspended for 22-24 months. Decree No. 46/2016, signed on May 26, 2016, currently states that fines of VND16-18 million ($720-$820) and four to six-month suspensions apply.
Lesser drink-driving violations, of 50-80 milligrams / 100 milliliters of blood (Level 2), will come with fines of VND18-20 million ($820-$909) and a 14-18 month driving suspension if the proposal is adopted. Decree No. 46 currently directs a fine of VND7-8 million ($318-$363) and a suspension of three to five months.
For the lowest level of violation (Level 1), of less than 50 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood, the fines remain the same as specified level in Decree No. 46, of VND2-3 million ($90-$136) and a one to three-month suspension.
For motorbike riders, the Vietnam Road Administration has proposed fines of VND7-8 million ($318-$363) and suspensions of 22-24 months for Level 3 offenses. Decree No. 46 stipulates VND3-4 million ($136-$181) and a three to five-month suspension.
The Ministry of Transport earlier issued a directive on strengthening action against drink-drivers.
The Vietnam Road Administration has cooperated with the Traffic Safety Department and other related departments to develop the proposals, which are contained in a draft decree amending and supplementing Decree No. 46.
