HCM CITY — Women and love are featured in new drama shows staged by theatres in HCM City to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8.
Artists from the private drama troupe Hoàng Thái Thanh will offer Lạc Ở Đáy Sông (Lost in the River) and Lồng Sắt (The Cage), both produced by talented female theatre director-actress Ái Như.
The two works feature urban women and their challenges in a modern market economy, starring talented actresses Tuyết Thu and Kim Huyền.
Another play about social issues, based on a short story by famous female author Nguyễn Ngọc Tư, will be included.
The play, Trả Lại Lia Thia (Returning Home), is a production that uses literary elements written by Tư, winner of the Southeast Asian Writers Award from the Thai Royal Family in 2008 and the Literaturpeis Prize 2018 from the Frankfurt Book Festival.
Realistic images of women living in farms in the south, their culture and lifestyle are highlighted.
“Our shows feature the different stories of southern farmers who have different difficulties and opportunities to be free to work, talk, share and love together for a better life here,” said the theatre’s owner and art director Ái Như.
Begun in 2010, Hoàng Thái Thanh Drama Troupe features 20 professional artists. Its performances have attracted more than 15,000 spectators.

Thiên Đăng Drama Stage will restage its famous play on women, Giáng Hương (Women in the Theatre), in a new version.
The show is directed by the theatre’s founder and Meritorious Artist Thành Lộc.
It portrays a theatre actress who devotes and sacrifices her life to her art.
It is based on Sân Khâu Về Khuya (The Dark in the Theatre), a famous cải lương (reformed opera) play in the 1960s written by late celebrated artist Năm Châu, who was a guru of the South’s traditional theatre.
Director Lộc will use new concepts and techniques in drama. He used talented actresses Lê Khánh and Vân Trang to guarantee his production’s success.
Giáng Hương is scheduled for 8pm on March 9 at 62 Trần Quang Khải Street, District 1.— VNS
