Doctors in Ho Chi Minh City have recently removed a giant uterine fibroid weighing 6.3 kilograms from a patient.
The surgery lasted five hours at the Thu Duc District Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday, Dr. Nguyen Trieu Vu, head of the infirmary’s oncology department, confirmed on Saturday.
The patient, a 54-year-old resident in Hiep Binh Chanh Ward, Thu Duc District, was admitted to the hospital on October 21 with such symptoms as an enlarged stomach and abdominal pain.
A health examination showed that she had a giant uterine fibroid, which placed pressure on organs in the abdominal cavity, and had to undergo a surgical procedure.
The leiomyomas measured 40×50 centimeters and weighed 6.3 kilograms.
The surgical team was able to safely remove it from the patient without harming her organs.
According to Dr. Vu, uterine fibroid is a common gynecological pathology in women.
Most cases are benign, progress slowly, and do not require surgery.
However, if the fibroid becomes large enough, it can compress the abdominal organs, causing pain and discomfort or prolonged bleeding.
Patients are recommended to undergo regular examinations to closely monitor their condition, the doctor added.
