(Vietnam Insider) – Vietnam has claimed the top prize at Russia’s revived Intervision song contest, a state-backed event promoted as a conservative, geopolitical alternative to Eurovision.

The competition, relaunched at the order of President Vladimir Putin after Russia was banned from Eurovision in 2022, emphasizes “traditional family values” and features participants from countries Moscow deems friendly. Acts from over 20 nations, including China, India, Brazil, and South Africa, performed before a global audience spanning Asia, Africa, South America, and parts of Europe.

Vietnamese singer Duc Phuc secured first place with a powerful performance based on a folktale about a king defending his country against invaders. He received a trophy and a cash prize of 30 million roubles (about $360,000). Kyrgyzstan and Qatar won second and third place, respectively.

Russia’s own contestant, nationalist pop star “Shaman” (Yaroslav Dronov), withdrew his entry in deference to the host nation. The organizers announced that Saudi Arabia will host next year’s edition.

The event drew controversy when U.S. representatives dropped out: Australian-born singer Vassy withdrew under political pressure from Canberra, while U.S.-born R&B singer Brandon Howard had already stepped aside citing family reasons.

Russian officials portrayed Intervision as a cultural alternative to the West. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized preserving “national traditions and moral values,” while taking a swipe at Eurovision’s inclusivity.

Vietnam’s victory highlights both the country’s rising cultural presence on the international stage and the symbolic weight of a contest designed to project Moscow’s influence abroad.

American pop star Jason Derulo unexpectedly canceled his headline performance in Ho Chi Minh City on June 28, citing health concerns, just hours before the event was set to begin. The concert, which also featured popular Vietnamese artists Chi Pu, Tang Duy Tan, and Mono, proceeded as planned despite the singer’s absence.

According to event spokesperson Thi Vo, Derulo’s withdrawal came as a surprise to the organizers. “We sincerely apologize to the audience. The event has been months in preparation, and while Jason Derulo’s absence is unfortunate, the show will continue with our talented local artists,” Thi said.

Derulo had initially been scheduled to arrive in Ho Chi Minh City on June 26. However, only his 30-member team, mainly dancers, landed as planned. The singer postponed his flight twice — first to June 27, then again to the morning of June 28. By midday, as fans and organizers awaited his arrival at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, only two members of his management team appeared, informing organizers that Derulo would not be performing due to health issues.

Organizers confirmed that Derulo’s full performance fee had been paid in advance, and all technical preparations — including stage, sound, and lighting — had been completed. “Following the concert, we will consult with our legal team to determine the appropriate course of action regarding the contract,” Thi noted.

Jason Derulo, 36, launched his solo recording career in 2009. He has since sold over 250 million singles globally and earned 14 platinum singles in the United States.

Vietnamese authorities have officially charged 141 individuals — including foreign nationals, business leaders, and civil servants — in connection with a massive illegal gambling operation at the King Club, located in the Pullman Hotel in central Hanoi.

The Ministry of Public Security’s Security Investigation Agency has concluded its investigation and transferred the case to the Supreme People’s Procuracy. Charges of “organizing gambling” and “gambling” stem from illicit operations involving over $111.4 million, making this one of the most significant gambling busts in recent years.

Among those facing prosecution are three South Korean nationals and two Vietnamese executives, who have been charged with organizing illegal gambling activities. The remaining 136 individuals — all Vietnamese — are accused of participating in the gambling network.

An international arrest warrant has been issued for Kim In Sung, a South Korean national and director of HSDVNCO., LTD. Authorities say he fled Vietnam before the investigation was launched and allegedly pocketed $9.4 million in illegal profits.

The King Club, operated by Viet Hai Dang Investment and Entertainment Services Co., Ltd., offered electronic gaming activities in violation of Vietnamese law, which restricts casino-style gaming to foreign passport holders only. However, investigators say club managers and business leaders knowingly allowed 136 Vietnamese citizens to participate through unauthorized membership schemes.

Gaming options reportedly included slots, roulette, and baccarat. Vietnamese clients were recruited via personal networks or direct outreach and given access to the gaming floor with illicit membership cards.

Commenting on the case, Sophie Dao, Lawyer and Senior Partner at GBS, said: “This is a wake-up call for foreign investors and expatriates doing business in Vietnam. Vietnamese law clearly distinguishes between legal and illegal forms of entertainment, especially when it comes to gambling. Violating those boundaries — whether directly or through complicity — carries severe legal consequences.” She continued: “Foreign nationals working in Vietnam must understand that even passive involvement in prohibited activities, especially those linked to organized gambling, can lead to criminal prosecution and international arrest warrants. This case reinforces the importance of strict legal compliance and responsible business practices.”

Authorities say that digital forensics, testimony from participants, and data extracted from the club’s software system provided sufficient evidence to charge all 141 individuals. The club’s operations were reportedly conducted with full knowledge of the legal restrictions, yet continued due to the promise of high profits.

The scandal has triggered renewed scrutiny of Vietnam’s casino industry and sparked calls for tighter regulatory oversight of gaming activities targeting foreign visitors.

As the case progresses toward prosecution, legal experts warn that Vietnam is increasingly intolerant of illicit operations — regardless of nationality.

Một thực tế đã được chứng minh, người Việt dễ tiếp thu, đặc biệt quan tâm tới những trò chơi mang đậm văn hóa truyền thống Trung Quốc, thể hiện tính thẩm mỹ của Trung Quốc. Việt Nam cũng trở thành quốc gia nước ngoài thích hợp để phát triển game Trung Quốc, thu hút nhiều nhà sản xuất game Trung Quốc đến đầu tư phát triển, “Ashes of the kingdom” chính là game đầu tiên đi đầu “trong lĩnh vực này”.

Sự quan tâm đặc biệt của người dùng Việt đã truyền cảm hứng vào ngành công nghiệp game Trung Quốc thông qua game “Ashes of the kingdom”, Ngược lại, ngành game Trung Quốc cũng đã mở cửa thị trường Việt Nam bằng game “Ashes of the kingdom”. Có lẽ trong tương lai, càng có nhiều game mang đậm nét văn hóa Trung Hoa xâm nhập vào thị trường Việt Nam, người Việt có thể hiểu biết nhiều hơn về nền văn hóa độc đáo và lãng mạn của Trung Hoa, không chỉ qua phim ảnh, phim truyền hình mà còn qua trò chơi.
