Announced on May 22, the initiative involves installing advanced rainwater collection systems to ensure a sustainable water supply for teachers and students across the region. These systems are designed to be climate-resilient and highly efficient.
Gravity Water’s innovative approach connects large all-weather water tanks to smart meters, which monitor both groundwater usage and rainwater capture. This ensures that schools have a reliable year-round water supply. The system operates automatically, using water level sensors to manage water distribution to school kitchens, bathrooms, and dormitories, where students bathe and wash clothes.
Additionally, Gravity Water is training school administrators to monitor water consumption monthly. Teachers are encouraged to promote good water management and personal hygiene practices in their classrooms, integrating these lessons into both academic and non-academic activities.
Phan Viet Dung, the program manager for Gravity Water in Hoa Binh, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “We install five systems every week and are excited to visit each unique school site. Despite challenges like varying traffic, distance between schools, and differing infrastructure conditions, we are committed to ensuring that every school has a stable supply of clean water.”
Danny Wright, founder and CEO of Gravity Water, highlighted the potential impact of rainwater harvesting: “Rainwater harvesting is not new in Vietnam. It’s one of the world’s oldest technologies. I’ve seen schools using split bamboo stalks to collect water from roofs. Our technology has the potential to significantly improve water access for these rural communities.”
Apple’s collaboration with Gravity Water is part of its broader water strategy, aimed at addressing water availability, quality, and access throughout its global supply chain. The application of proven technologies to improve water access, sanitation, and personal hygiene in regions like Hoa Binh province underscores the scale and significance of these efforts.
