Surpassing 99 contenders, Vietnamese Banh Mi stands at the top position in the ranking of Top 100 sandwiches in the world recently announced by the culinary website TasteAtlas.
Banh mi – the “national soul” dish of Vietnamese people
According to TasteAtlas’ ranking, Banh Mi is a type of Vietnamese-style sandwich famous for its core ingredient, the baguette. The website explains that the baguette originated from France and is combined with Vietnamese ingredients such as vegetables, spices, meats, and Vietnamese sausage.
TasteAtlas also courteously instructs foreign readers on how to pronounce Banh Mi as “bun mee” and introduces the diversity of Banh Mi in Vietnam. Apart from the meat sandwich, which is the most famous type of Banh Mi, Vietnam offers various other types such as Banh Mi with minced pork, fish cake Banh Mi, roast pork Banh Mi, grilled chicken Banh Mi, Vietnamese sausage Banh Mi, and Vietnamese-style omelette Banh Mi.
Notably, not only Banh Mi but TasteAtlas also reserves two additional spots, number 9 for meat Banh Mi and number 29 for roast pork Banh Mi.
In particular, meat Banh Mi is defined as a traditional Vietnamese-style sandwich made from various types of Vietnamese cold cuts along with cucumber, egg sauce, pickled carrots and radishes, spread with a bit of liver pate. Additionally, meat Banh Mi is often garnished with ingredients such as coriander, black pepper, and sliced chili.
TasteAtlas mentions that tourists can easily enjoy any type of Banh Mi they desire anywhere in Vietnam. Due to the attractiveness of Banh Mi and the delicious fillings of Vietnam, these sandwiches have been exported for a long time and Banh Mi shops have sprouted up all over the world. The information website, known as the “world food map,” also recommends some famous eateries for diners to visit in Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Hanoi, and even in the United States and Australia.
Foreign tourists are fascinated by Vietnamese bread
This is not the first time Vietnamese Banh Mi has been honored in the top list of the world’s best sandwiches. Previously, CNN included meat Banh Mi in its list of the 24 best sandwiches in the world and the 50 best street foods in the world.
The reputable French newspaper Le Monde has also praised it highly: “Simple, balanced, cheap but above all extremely delicious. This is a dish that makes you want to bite into it just by looking at it… After doner kebab or sandwich, Vietnamese Banh Mi is considered a new symbol of world cuisine.”
Together with Pho, “Banh Mi” has been included in many famous dictionaries worldwide such as Oxford, Cambridge, Merriam-Webster…
