A British tourist has been saved by doctors in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang after being involved in a serious traffic accident, which caused her right heart atrium to rupture.
The Da Nang General Hospital confirmed on Tuesday that Isabelle Garrett Peel, a 25-year-old traveler from the United Kingdom, is now recovering following emergency surgery.
According to doctors, Peel had a serious road accident while traveling from Da Nang to Hoi An, a popular tourist destination in Quang Nam Province to the south of the city, on the afternoon of October 27, and was brought to the hospital’s emergency ward at around 4:00 pm that day.
On her arrival, Peel was unconscious and had suffered multiple injuries including one to her heart, head and chest wounds, abdominal trauma, and a damaged right lung.
Given her serious condition, doctors decided to go ahead with a two-hour emergency surgery to save her life.
According to Phan Dinh Thao, a senior doctor from the hospital’s cardiovascular surgery department, Peel’s chest injury had resulted in a rupture to her right atrium, which could have been fatal had the surgery not been carried out.
After receiving Peel, doctors took 15 minutes to reach their decision on the operation, which was crucial to her survival, Dr. Thao assessed.
