Nearly 36 kilograms of drugs of various types have been found in such products as powdered milk, tea, and coffee that were recently imported into Vietnam by postal services.
The Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department confirmed on Tuesday it had coordinated with anti-smuggling officers under the municipal Department of Public Security to inspect 16 parcels with suspicious signs.
They found synthetic drugs in the form of MDMA pills, also known as ecstasy, cannabis, and ketamine hidden in boxes of moisturizing cream as well as cans of roasted peanuts, tea, and coffee.
The containers were made of tin, wrapped up with foil, vacuumed, and sealed to prevent the drugs from being detected by scanners and sniffing dogs.
MDMA pills were also discovered in other boxes of powdered milk.
These cans were designed with two layers, with the upper containing powdered milk and the lower containing the ecstasy.
The discovered narcotics weighed nearly 36 kilograms.
The parcels either had bogus addresses or lacked names of recipients, according to a representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department.
They were imported from the United States, Canada, and Germany by postal services in the form of individual, non-commercial gifts, he added.
Further investigation is ongoing.
